Sustainable Development Goals

*Disclaimer, this will be my assingment project and will be mark by my lecturer.

In September 2015, the United Nation (UN) General Assembly adopted the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development that features seventeen (17) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Building on the principle of “leaving nobody or no one behind”, the new Agenda emphasizes a holistic approach to achieving property of sustainable development for all.

The term sustainability is generally accustomed indicate programs, initiatives and actions geared toward the preservation of a selected resource. However, it truly refers to four distinct areas: human, social, economic and environmental – called or known as the four pillars of sustainability.

Hi everyone !, Vanakkam !, Nĭhǎo !, Bonjour !, Hola !, Konnichiwa !.

Muhammad Mustaqim bin Mustapha. That is my name. That is really nice and cool name, is it?. Just kidding, we all got the cool one, be proud of it. Alright! So, it is my first year as a student of International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM). What does the title of this blog have to do with me?. " UNGS 1201, Sustainable Development: Issues, Policies and Practices " is the name and one of my subject that I took, and indeed this blog aiming for it ; as mentioned above at disclaimer section. By the way, it is not just the assingment project only but indeed also benefits to all of us. Next, let me introduce the name of my lecturer, her is (Assistant Professor) Dr.Hazlina Bt. Md. Yusof from Department of Mechatronics Engineering, IIUM. Thus, with her as my instructor ,I believe I will manage to understand better and love this subject. I think with this simple introduction and it is enough, so, let’s get started and begin the main topic.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ?. What does it mean, what is it about, why is it a topic of choice to be peeled off and is it important for us all to know?. In a nutshell that I can convey and summarize, it is basically about one of Agenda 2030 associated by intergovernmental agreement that's designed to guide world development efforts over ensuing fifteen years, between 2015 and 2030. Its centerpiece, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), replaces the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), that control sway between 2000 and 2015. The new goals area unit designed to create on the MDGs and complete what have not done yet with it. But whereas there have been solely eight (8) MDGs, the SDGs area unit seventeen (17) in variety, with 169 associated targets, and 304 projected indicators. This dramatic jump in goals and targets from the MDGs to SDGs has aggravated criticism, even ridicule. The governments that have signed on, however, seem clearly happy with themselves. “On behalf of the peoples we tend to serve, we've adopted a historic call and decision on a comprehensive, extensive or far-reaching and people-centered set of universal and transformative goals and targets,” their resolution states. - recorded and written by one of reporter from AL DÍA News, (1835 Market St, Philadelphia, PA 19103, United States) on December 09, 2020.

What are the seventeen features and characteristic of the SDGs?

  1. 1. No Poverty

  4. 4. Quality Education

  5. 5. Gender Equality

  6. 6. Clean Water and Sanitation

I would to take a few words from the video above ; we might and expected be failed due to drastic of population growth at the same time we must not failed , we must make the life better by protect our home, today tommorrow and forever. Indeed to do it, but how?. Here I just want to share a fews of action and first step we can do espeacially as a student.

Things we can contribute now :-

  • Suppose and think before print – Do recycle the paper that we will use for printing.

  • Save electricity by turning off appliances once not in use – use energy friendly.

  • Close up the light if needed and profit of the natural light instead.

  • Really simply recycle - Paper, plastic, glass, aluminium and etc.

  • Take short (er) showers and save water.

  • Make our environment as green as possible - throw trash to the proper order and be responsible of it.

That are the general one that we can do and apply easily. I think that things are very common and often happens in our daily lives as well. Next, let's take a look to a few from specific one based on 17 pillars of SDGs.

SDGs in our university has been sown for a long time, at every level, among students, staffs, university, national or international levels. For instance, IIUM has launched a programmed name ''IIUM Sejahtera'', it involves full of aspect, in simple ways it very comprehensive based on our slogan " Garden of Knowledge and Virtue - Leading The Way ; Khalifah, Amanah, Iqra, Rahmatan Lil 'Alamin ".
